Project Update Bulletin 5

The project update bulletin provides information on the latest construction progress of Gloucestershire’s Energy from Waste facility.

Foundation piling work has been completed. This means that civil engineering work is now concentrated on ground preparation, excavation of the bunker (where the waste will be discharged from the Refuse Collection Vehicles (RCVs) and stored before processing) and the boiler house, and pouring concrete ground beams and slabs to support the main facility structures and buildings. Excavation works for the boiler house will continue until mid-April; bunker excavation will continue until mid-June.

Proposals are being considered to use a technique known as slip forming, to construct the bunker and turbine building (the building that will house the steam turbine) during July and August this year.

Slip forming is a very efficient construction technique. It involves the continuous pouring, that is 24/7 of concrete for around three weeks to construct the bunker, and a similar process for five days to build the turbine hall.

Site operation Health and Safety continues to be maintained to a high standard. There are now approximately 90 people engaged at the site.

If you have any enquiries about the construction of the Gloucestershire Energy from Waste facility, please email info@ubbgloucestershire.co.uk or contact Ian Barber on 01242 248880. Our emergency out-of-hours contact telephone number, 07860 268578, is posted on the site notice board.

The Gloucestershire Energy from Waste facility is part of Gloucestershire Council’s wider waste and resources management strategy to reduce, recycle and recover waste materials across the county and to move away from reliance on end-of-life landfill. Construction Under Way at Gloucestershire’s Energy from Waste Facility

Major construction work at Gloucestershire’s new Energy from Waste facility is now underway.  Piling equipment has arrived on site to install piled foundations to support the major buildings, process equipment and waste bunker. Other site preparation work continues, with construction of the site access road being completed in the next couple of weeks and the temporary construction compound area by the end of the year.

Green light for Javelin Park Energy from Waste Facility

In January 2015, Urbaser Balfour Beatty (UBB) secured planning permission to construct the Energy-from-Waste (EfW) facility at Javelin Park in Gloucestershire. Once operational, the Javelin Park facility will process up to 190,000 tonnes of residual household waste per year from Gloucestershire and generate 116,000 megawatt hours of electricity annually - enough to power approximately 26,000 homes - significantly increasing the county’s renewable energy production.

Inside Out West

Urbaser Balfour Beatty (UBB) welcomed the BBC Inside Out West coverage of the proposal for an Energy from Waste facility at Javelin Park, aired on Monday 7 January 2013.

With the potential to save Gloucestershire County Council and its taxpayers £190m over 25 years, providing enough electricity for 25,000 homes and diverting many thousands of tonnes of waste from landfill, the Javelin Park project is an important issue for the county.
