Project Update: Rise of the Machines

Project Update: Rise of the Machines

With erection of the main buildings and steel structures continuing to schedule, there has been increased activity as the process equipment is installed. At the heart of the energy from waste plant is the combustion grate which is now in place, and preparations are in hand for the installation of the boiler panels which will capture the energy created from the combustion process and raise steam to drive the turbine and electricity generator.

Project Update: Heavy Metal

Project Update: Heavy Metal

The autumn has seen continued concreting works, with the construction of the turbine hall by continuous concrete pouring (slip forming), as well as the formation of the retaining walls for the building that will house the incinerator bottom ash processing. The last section of concrete floor in the area of the combustion grate and boiler has now been completed, with foundation works for the electricity substation and transformer near completion.

Project Update: Moving Ever Upwards

Project Update: Moving Ever Upwards

While below ground concrete works continued during the summer months, September saw the buildings start to emerge above ground, with the concrete bunker walls appearing almost overnight. The first elements of the steel frame construction - the supports for the turbine hall – have now been erected, which signals the start of the main process plant installation, and construction of the administration block/visitor centre.

Project Update Bulletin 7

The project update bulletin provides the latest progress on the construction of Gloucestershire’s Energy from Waste facility.

We have planned a further phase of foundation piling as part of the construction works, which will be commencing this week and continuing, intermittently until mid-June 2-17. This work will mainly be focussed on the bunker area of the site.

Project Update Bulletin 6

The project update bulletin provides the latest progress on the construction of Gloucestershire’s Energy from Waste facility.

In recent weeks, activities have been focussed on the construction of the capping beams and foundation pads for the main boiler house, and prefabricating steel reinforcements for the Incinerator Bottom Ash (IBA) treatment hall at the eastern end of the building complex.

Progress Update: Work below ground nears completion

Progress Update: Work below ground nears completion

As of 1st April, we’ve almost completed our work below ground to prepare the site’s foundations. The first phase of foundation piling and excavation is ongoing, as the boiler house is excavated and the waste storage bunker groundwork continues to take shape. All of the concrete works, including the capping beams which sit above the piles, will offer support and strength for the main process plant and buildings of the Facility once complete.

Project Update Bulletin 5

The project update bulletin provides information on the latest construction progress of Gloucestershire’s Energy from Waste facility.

Foundation piling work has been completed. This means that civil engineering work is now concentrated on ground preparation, excavation of the bunker (where the waste will be discharged from the Refuse Collection Vehicles (RCVs) and stored before processing) and the boiler house, and pouring concrete ground beams and slabs to support the main facility structures and buildings. Excavation works for the boiler house will continue until mid-April; bunker excavation will continue until mid-June.

Proposals are being considered to use a technique known as slip forming, to construct the bunker and turbine building (the building that will house the steam turbine) during July and August this year.

Slip forming is a very efficient construction technique. It involves the continuous pouring, that is 24/7 of concrete for around three weeks to construct the bunker, and a similar process for five days to build the turbine hall.

Site operation Health and Safety continues to be maintained to a high standard. There are now approximately 90 people engaged at the site.

If you have any enquiries about the construction of the Gloucestershire Energy from Waste facility, please email info@ubbgloucestershire.co.uk or contact Ian Barber on 01242 248880. Our emergency out-of-hours contact telephone number, 07860 268578, is posted on the site notice board.

The Gloucestershire Energy from Waste facility is part of Gloucestershire Council’s wider waste and resources management strategy to reduce, recycle and recover waste materials across the county and to move away from reliance on end-of-life landfill. Construction Under Way at Gloucestershire’s Energy from Waste Facility

Construction Under Way at Gloucestershire’s Energy from Waste Facility

Major construction work at Gloucestershire’s new Energy from Waste facility is now underway.  Piling equipment has arrived on site to install piled foundations to support the major buildings, process equipment and waste bunker. Other site preparation work continues, with construction of the site access road being completed in the next couple of weeks and the temporary construction compound area by the end of the year.
