Project Update Bulletin 8

The project update bulletin provides the latest progress on the construction of Gloucestershire’s Energy from Waste facility.

The second phase of foundation piling has now been completed. Work has commenced on the construction of the reinforced concrete slab to the main boiler house basement. The concrete ‘shear walls’ separating the boiler house from the waste storage bunker will be completed shortly, enabling the bunker excavation to be progressed down to 14 metres below ground level.

Construction of the floor slab and perimeter walls to the incinerator bottom ash (IBA) treatment hall are progressing well, and work continues on casting the concrete caps to foundation piles that will support the flue gas treatment (FGT) hall and internal plant. The main items of site equipment are three crawler cranes, five excavators, plus a number of dump trucks and vibrating rollers. There are around 120 personnel on site. Site operations and Health and Safety continue to a high standard.

The construction activities have recently been subject to detailed internal quality and health and safety audits, with positive outcomes reported in both areas. In recent weeks there have been some instances of minor vandalism around the site perimeter, as well as one of trespass onto the construction site. The Gloucestershire Constabulary has been informed, and we continue to maintain a close liaison with the police.

There is some low level construction activity ongoing over weekends, under the working and notification scheme agreed with the Waste Planning Authority (Gloucestershire County Council) and Stroud District Council.

The Gloucestershire Energy from Waste facility is part of Gloucestershire County Council’s wider waste and resources management strategy to reduce, recycle and recover waste materials across the county and to move away from reliance on end-of-life landfill.
