The Gloucestershire Energy from Waste Facility has announced that it will reopen its Visitor Centre for new bookings in May 2022, subject to COVID-19 restrictions. Since July 2021, the Facility has prioritised rescheduled bookings for people who had their visits postponed due to the lockdowns. The Visitor Centre provides space for the local community to learn about sustainable waste management and resource use, with access to a working facility.

The space can be used by schools, colleges, community and other interest groups for free educational tours, courses and workshops on the waste hierarchy, climate change and sustainability. The Aerodrome classroom, Meteor meeting room and outdoor area also provide space for community and business meetings as well as events. Businesses can also hire the space for a fee.

Following social distancing measures, site tours will be limited to a maximum of 10 people per group whilst the Visitor Centre can hold 20 adults or a small class of children to maintain effective management of restrictions. Larger groups can be accommodated, subject to their requirements, by contacting the Visitor Centre to discuss this further. The Visitor Centre has run virtual presentations since March 2020 to inform the local community about what happens on site, which will continue for those who are unable to visit the Facility in person.

Dan Pearson, General Manager, commented:

“The Gloucestershire Energy from Waste Facility has continued to operate smoothly since operations began in October 2019. The reopening of the Visitor Centre will give the local community the chance to learn about what happens to their waste and our plans to protect and support the biodiversity surrounding the Facility. If you are interested in booking a visit or hiring the space for your school, community group or business, please do get in touch with our team.”

All facilities are now available to book on the Site Tours and Visitor Centre page of the website. Throughout the pandemic, the Facility has continued to generate the equivalent electricity to power approximately 25,000 homes across Gloucestershire.
