Project Update Bulletin 20

Construction of the facility is almost complete with most of the physical elements having been installed. The final parts of the building’s facade are being fitted ready for installation of the external louvres, which control air movement coming in and out, due to start in February.

The facility is now fully connected to the main control system, and the installation of the last elements of mechanical and electrical equipment will be finished in the first quarter of 2019. The facility has now entered the commissioning phase of the construction build and this month, Control Engineers will be working to check that all communication systems are correctly linked up to the control room and working properly.

At the same time, the commissioning team will also check the functionality of each of the facility’s systems. This includes checking that the computers are capturing the correct information, verifying the mechanical components are functioning correctly, and that all information is correctly delivered to the main computer.

Once this is completed all the systems in turn will be connected to the National Grid to ensure the facility is ready to commence hot commissioning. During hot commissioning the performance of the individual systems is tested by introducing waste as a fuel for the first time.

The Gloucestershire Energy from Waste facility is part of Gloucestershire’s Joint Municipal Waste Management Strategy, which aims to reduce, recycle, and recover waste materials across the county, and move away from reliance on end-of-life landfill.
